Overview

Employing in Egypt

Employment runs under the Labour Law plus the Social Insurance Law, with written contracts and mandatory registration. Dismissal protection is strong and generally requires a labour-court route.

Minimum wage

The private-sector minimum is about EGP 6,000 per month in 2024*, revised periodically.

Payroll cycle & extra pay

Monthly payroll. An annual periodic raise is required by law for insured employees.

Public holidays

Around 14 public-holiday days a year, including national and religious dates.

Onboarding & probation

Written contracts are standard, often in Arabic. Probation is up to three months.

Employer costs

What you pay on top of salary

Employer social-insurance contributions come to roughly 18.75% of the insured wage.

Employer contribution*Rate
Social insurance (employer)~18.75%*

Insured-wage caps

Social insurance applies between a minimum and a maximum insured wage set each year, so contributions plateau for higher earners.

Employee-side taxes

Employees pay their social-insurance share plus income tax on a progressive scale, withheld at source. Withholding is the employer's responsibility, which under EOR means ours.

Types of leave

Statutory leave in Egypt

Annual leave

21 paid days a year after six months, rising to 30 after ten years of service or age 50.

Maternity leave

90 days of maternity leave, available a limited number of times, funded per the Social Insurance Law.

Sick leave

Paid through social insurance on a scale, with a medical certificate.

Other leave

Paid leave is provided for pilgrimage and certain personal circumstances.

Employment termination

Ending employment in Egypt

Process & notice

Notice is typically two to three months, and an employer generally cannot dismiss an open-ended employee without a labour-court finding of a valid reason.

Severance

Compensation for arbitrary dismissal is set by law, commonly around two months' pay per year of service*.

Probation

Up to three months, with simpler termination during the period.

Contractor risk

A contractor working like an employee can be reclassified, with back social insurance and entitlements.
